Revatio vs Viagra: 2 main differences

tablets-Viagra

While both Revatio and Viagra have the same way of action and active ingredient Sildenafil, they have several major differences making them separate medicine which should not be used to substitute each other.

What is Viagra and what it is used for

Viagra is the #1 treatment for erectile dysfunction worldwide. Nearly 140 million of men worldwide are diagnosed with this disorder and many of them were not able to have any sexual life before Viagra was released.

The main active component of the medicine, Sildenafil citrate acts as PDE5 inhibitor. All processes in our bodies are controlled by chemical signals. Muscle work is no difference and smooth muscles of blood vessels in porous penis tissues are controlled by PDE5. This enzyme is needed to lower the amount of blood delivered to inactive penis to avoid its overfilling with blood.

However, during sexual agitation this enzyme should be inhibited in order to relax smooth muscles, increase size of blood vessels, fill penis with blood and provide a stable erection. Normally PDE5 inhibitors are produced in men body, yet sometimes their quantities are not sufficient.

This is when Viagra comes into action, providing a huge amount of inhibitors. This allows receiving a stable erection lasting up to 4 hours after the intake in case sexual agitation is felt. Viagra is then broken and removed from the body with urine and feces. Using it causes no addiction and some patients taking Viagra regularly even reported permanent increase in penis size.

However, Sildenafil is a very potent drug, which means it can interact with other medicines and cause various side effects if not taken according to prescription. Detailed medical examination is recommended before taking Viagra to exclude the possibility of severe side effects occurring.

What is Revatio and what it is used for

Revatio has the same active component as Viagra, Sildenafil citrate. However, its dose is slightly lower and cause of action differs a lot.

Revatio is a prescription drug used to treat PAH – Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension. This disorder affects blood vessels in lungs, making them very tensed and forcing heart to push hard in order to ensure blood flow through the lungs. The result is high blood pressure in lungs, chest pain and short breath. This leads to premature heart exhaustion and risks of early heart attacks along with permanent fatigue and inability to perform many physical activities.

Revatio should be used on a constant basis to supply your body with adequate quantities of PDE5 inhibitors. It allows relaxing the tensed smooth muscles in lungs, increasing the diameter of blood vessels, lowering the blood pressure and removing the discomforting PAH symptoms. Revatio does not cause addiction and shares the list of side effects with Viagra.

Despite many common there are several major differences between these 2 medicines:

  • Viagra is taken on case-to-case basis to treat erectile dysfunction. It grants a stable erection due to a huge dose of Sildenafil, works only during sexual agitation and is removed from the body afterwards
  • Revatio is a prescription drug for regular use, aiming to treat PAH and lower magnitude of its symptoms. It should be taken on a regular basis (3 times a day with 6 hours between intakes) to saturate muscles of blood vessels in lungs with sufficient quantities of PDE5 inhibitors
  • Improved erection may occur while on Revatio, as it has sufficient quantities of sildenafil citrate, yet Viagra is much better suited for this purpose due to deploying a much bigger amount of PDE5 inhibitors at a time
  • Combination of Revatio and Viagra is prohibited due to risk of dropping blood pressure really low, leading to fatal outcome

These drugs do not substitute each other and should be used wisely to achieve the best results while avoiding side effects and unwanted consequences. Choose wisely and live happily!
